1.30.08 : : Reverting Back to My Youth

Even though I really really really want to complain about the snow, again, I'm going to hold back and instead focus on something a bit more heart-warming.

A good friend of mine got me these two ponies as a Chrsitmas gift this year, knowing that I had great love for My Little Ponies as a child. They sit on my desk and bring a smile to my face remembering the many years I spent collecting the colorful toys and playing with them with my friends. I even had a brief stint collecting them again as an adult when Ebay first arrived on the scene.

So today, on this blustery winter day let's turn our focus not on the freezing temperatures but on warm childhood memories. I want to hear what your favorite toy was growing up. It seems that many of you blog commenters have been in hibernation so I'm even giving an incentive for the best comment on this subject. The winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to Amy Carroll Photography!

I too loved My Little Ponies!!
My all time favorite has to be the good ol' fashion blonde bombshell herself, Barbie. I think I had every accessory ever made, several dolls, I think my favorite were the annual Christmas Barbie with the super fancy dress, but also Ken, Skipper the bright pink convertible, the house with an elevator, the swimming pool and even the McDonalds. Also, I had so many clothes, we even drew them and got to go to the fabric store on our birthdays and pick a fabric and my mom would sew us an outfit. Plus who wouldn't love a shoe collection like Barbies. Like they say, The bi--- had everything, how could you not like her.

I am embarrassed to admit this but my favorite toy when I was a kid was my whoopee cushion! I loved to play jokes on people, especially unsuspecting adults. I would bring it to school, to restaurants and to my grandma's house. My grandma got a bigger kick out of it than I did! There's always something funny about fart noises!

My favorite toy was my tinker-toys. I loved to build things with them. I was so excited when I got them. Right away I built something cool and ran into the kitchen to show my Mom. I slipped on the floor and hit my head on the coffee table and got a huge goose egg on my head. We were snowed in so I couldn't get stitches. Everytime I see that scar above my eye it reminds me of that great childhoood memory.

Growing up, my Cabbage Patch dolls were my best friends. I can remember what seems like every detail of the Christmas morning when I first got Alexis. She has short curly blonde hair and smelled like baby powder and I was so excited… And then to be handed another gift to be open to find ANOTHER doll!! That was my Carolina who looked just like me with long brown hair that was in pigtails and big brown eyes! I could not believe that Santa was so generous to give me two of them (mind you I was all of 8 years old). And my grandparents made me promise to love them and keep them forever because Santa had a VERY hard time getting them for me… Well the real story actually came out a couple of years ago when I was going through things in my old room back home and I came across my beloved dolls. Come to find out when the dolls were first released into the market there was such hype about them that people would stand in lines for hours to get these dolls. Well my great grandmother Isabella and My grandmother did just that to get me two. The problem was there was a lady behind them in the line that wanted the exact same doll as my Alexis and was not nice about it. So when the doors of the store opened she pushed past my then 83 year old grandmother to grab the doll… Well Grandma Bel happens to not like that and hit the women with her purse and took the doll from her! Then proceeded to tell the women that she was acting more like an animal then the young lady that she was. I till this day cannot image her doing this!!! But I know that I was much loved and have always taken great care of my “babies” in hope that someday I have a daughter or niece that I can pass them down too…

I have to say that Weeble Wobbles were one of my favorite toys when I was a kid. No matter what you did with them, they never fell down!!! "Weebles wobble, but never fall down!" I had the little town and the whole Weeble family. There were many hours that were played with the Weebles!

My favorite toy growing up (and this is probably not a toy to all - but was my life 3-5 evenings a week) was my ice skates. My parents taught me to skate and got me into lessons when I was three. Skating has always been my passion, my joy and my release. It's the best gift I was ever given since its a gift that I can enjoy and give to others. I was a figure skater from 3-18 then taught professionaly from 18-24. There is something magical about gliding on ice and warmth that hits my heart when a sweet little child learns jump or spin.

Maybe thats why I LOVE the freezing cold winters of West Michigan. :D I'd take these cold days over a hot summer day anytime.

Reading about everyone else's toys brings back a lot of memories, too. Remember She-rah? (I think that is spelled incorrectly). I loved my castle. lol.

I loved movies! I would watch them all of the time...knew ever word to cabbage patch kids, the little mermaid, pippi longstocking, and many more :) One day when we were on vacation down south, we were on our way back home and I had not gotten a souvenier yet. It took me forever to save up $20 before the trip and I finally found something worth spending it on...a Pippi Longstocking doll with the pig tails standing up and everything!!! (found @ Cracker Barrel!) She was my favorite toy! I am sure my Mom loved her when it made me even more motivated to come home and re-watch Pippi longstocking the movie, over and over again... :-)

I loved Pipeworks - they're not sold in stores anymore, but they have them on ebay now. Basically, you can build things out of them - like slides, tables, or storage things, or whatever your little dream is. We used to build "ambulances" and race our patients to the hospital down the street. The best was when we picked up the patient at our neighbor's house - "The Vans" (go figure, in WMi, a family that was van-something) because they were at the top of the hill - and so we'd push and everyone would jump in to the ambulance. Someone would have to be good at steering (looking back, I have no idea how the whole steering thing worked) because otherwise we'd go into the street and get yelled at... I'd have to say the Pipeworks - coupled with my Nurse Nancy book (she always had bandaids for everyone!) and I was going to be the perfect nurse!!

BTW, I love that one of your ponies has a lei and "grass" skirt!

I loved the Fisher Price "My Friend Dolls". I had them all Mandy, Jenny, Mikey, Becky, and Nikki! I actually bought the entire set again (new in box) from Ebay a few years ago. Now my girls play with them and I can remember back to my days of doll baths, hair styling, and dress up days!
